THE VATICAN MUSEUMS
The queues into the Vatican Museums wend their weary ways around the massive walls of St. Peter's. People flock to the Vatican Museums because it houses the Sistine Chapel and papal treasures that come from the mists of time. The wealth of the Catholic Church through the ages is on show here with objects from antiquity and paintings that defy description.
The Vatican Museums are open only in the morning from Monday to Saturday.
Our hotel is only 2 minutes in walking distance from the Vatican Museums!
CASTEL SANT'ANGELO
Rome's big castle protecting St. Peter's magnificently upon the banks of the Tiber. The castle acted as a refuge for fleeing popes who were escaping unfriendly marauders in the days when Rome was the world's most prized possession. You can visit the castle and see the frescoed rooms that welcomed their holy guests in times past. The view over the central Rome from the top of the ramparts is unmissable as is the little café at the top where you can sit before a frothy cappuccino and ponder upon treasures of Christendom below you.
GALLERIA BORGHESE
No visit to Rome would be complete without a visit to what is, probably, the city's most ornate, most elegant Baroque princely palazzo. The palace took over 12 years to restore and now you have to book to ensure yourselves a visit. The Galleria possesses a mind boggling array of Renaissance and Baroque masterpieces from Caravaggio to Dmenichino to Canova's marbly Paolina Borghese sitting, milkly, in a room of her own, begging admiration. Closed on Monday.
